Its a crazy place. Full of eccentrics, truly
multi racial and 80% of the regulars that I know
of have had some sort of psychotic episode in the
last 30 years - hence the terrible guitar playing
and council flat odour that greets you when you
enter. Also noticed the last time that I was in
that they have literally wall papered over some
of the pictures on the walls.

THE PLOT CONTINUES: |
|
|
One framed picture escaped the
fate to have been wall papered over ... Whilst
waiting for her pint of ale, Clarissa deciphers:
"LONG LIVE HER MAJESTY - QUEEN ELIZABETH
II"
"Coronation - 1952", says 'Snuffy', the
dreadlocked neighbour, who hopes to get invited
for an ale. "She handed the M.B.E. to Leslie
Heath who sadly passed away in August 2003, after
serving a remarkable 50 years at the Anchor and
Hope ... poor chap."
"And, why the 'Walthamstow Stadium'?"
"Dog-race-betting started here", he
replies ... |
|
... "In 1933,
William Chandler opened the stadium over in Walthamstow.
He came from very poor beginnings here in East London and
his first business venture was to operate as an illegal
street bookmaker with runners standing on street corners
in all districts of London's East end. As a matter of
fact, we had a dog-racing stadium right here in
Hackney." "What happened to it?" |
"They
stopped racing speedway at Waterden Road because
they kept bumping into the greyhounds ...",
'Snuffy' giggles and shows his cannabis-brownish
teeth. "A market takes place at the now
derelict stadium, it's pretty much a glorified
car boot sale ..."
"So, no more greyhound-racing in Hackney
...", Clarissa says, admiring another framed
picture which escaped wall papering.
"We now bet at Walthamstow. You want to
join? ...
Its just good clean fun, innit?" he
grins. "And you just cant tell,"
'Snuffy' adds knowingly. "You might actually
win some money" ... |
