Captain El Hadji Diouf won his second
consecutive African Footballer of the
Year title at the Confederation of
African Football's annual awards ceremony
in Johannesburg, Tuesday. Team member
Tony Sylva was named best goalkeeper of
the year, while Senegal's former coach,
Bruno Metsu, won Coach of the Year.

Diouf - seine Markenzeichen sind die

senegalesische Nationaltrainer Bruno
Metsu meinte zum angeblich nicht immer
vorbildlichen Lebenswandel von Diouf:
'Was er in seiner Freizeit treibt,
interessiert mich nicht. Für mich zählt
nur seine Leistung auf dem Platz - und in
dieser Beziehung bin ich mehr als
zufrieden mit ihm.' Die erstmalige
Qualifikation für eine Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft
verdankte die Nationalmannschaft Senegals
nicht zuletzt ihrem Torjäger El Hadji
Diouf. Der erst 22-jährige Stürmer
erzielte zu Beginn des neuen Jahrtausends
Tore wie am Fließband und avancierte zu
einem der Topstars des afrikanischen Fußballs.
