SIX STORIES FROM MOZAMBIQUE
© 1998 RADIO BRIDGE OVERSEAS TRUST
This is Elvira Viegas, a well-known
composer & singer in Maputo, Mozambiques capital.
She says, her songs reflect her daily life, social problems she
is confronted with
but which exist all over the
globe.
She does not make a difference between Mozambique and other
countries of the developing world.
Elvira Viegas is not only a composer and performer with her own
band, she represents FRELIMO, the ruling party, in parliament.
Does she stand for normality in a country which experienced war
for almost her entire life?

"Elvira Viegas about her music & her political
engagement"
Elvira Viegas, parliamentarian & singer
in Maputo, insists on the fact that problems worldwide seem to be
similar. "Ethnic wars, for example, destroy many
societies," she says. "I sing about the
desire of people to live in peace. I sing about love because love
is needed if people want to live in peace."
