Princess
Diana, also known as Lady Di,
died on August 31, 1997 in a
tragic car accident in Paris. She
was traveling with her then
partner Dodi Al-Fayed and her
bodyguard when their vehicle
crashed into a pillar in the Alma
Tunnel at high speed. Diana
suffered severe internal injuries
and later died in hospital.
The causes of the accident are
still the subject of speculation
and conspiracy theories in the
tabloid press, mainly due to her
popularity. ZDF, among others,
contributed its version of events
on February 20, 2007. A
well-known conspiracy theory is
the statement made by former MI6
officer Richard Tomlinson, which
he gave as an affidavit to the
French investigating judge Hervé
Stephan on August 30, 1998.
According to this, the driver
Henri Paul was blinded by a
"light cannon" or a
strobe flash gun. The flash of
light was confirmed by
eyewitnesses in the British ITV
documentary "Diana: The
Secrets Behind the Crash".
Tomlinson pointed out that he had
seen the same assassination plan
signed by MI6 officers on the
then Yugoslavian President
Slobodan Miloevic, which in
his view proved that MI6 was
responsible. In particular, the
suggestion made in the plan to
carry out the attack in a tunnel,
because this would increase the
risk to life, was, for Tomlinson,
the decisive indication that MI6
had been the perpetrator of the
assassination. |
The investigation
into Diana's death was reopened
by the British authorities in
February 2004 (Operation Paget) after doubts
arose about the results of the
French authorities'
investigations and rumors
surfaced that state agencies had
been involved in a murder plot. A
French journalist reported
attempts by the police to
intimidate him if he continued to
investigate. A complete
reconstruction of the accident is
no longer possible, however,
because not all parts of the
crashed car still exist. First,
the wreckage had to be cut open
in the tunnel in order to rescue
Diana and Trevor Rees-Jones.
According to the French
authorities, a fire in the
Ministry of Justice's warehouse
then destroyed parts of the
wreckage. |
