Catalyst
Religion and the Search for a New Society
in Africa
The importance of religions in political processes has so
far been neglected by the European public, and also in
the analyses of the experts. In spite of secularization
and the spread of a free market economy, the role of
religion has not been diminished. New and traditional
groups exist in parallel. At the centre of the meeting
has been the role of religions in Africa and their
historical, social and international contexts. What
contribution can be made by the religions in future in
processes of societal and political transformation in
Africa?
The meeting took place within the framework of the
academy's project "Sensitive about Africa".

Religion und Suche nach einer neuen Gesellschaft in
Afrika
Die Bedeutung der Religionen in politischen Prozessen
wurde bislang in der europäischen Öffentlichkeit, aber
auch in der Analyse durch Fachleute vernachlässigt.
Trotz Säkularisierung und verstärkter Durchsetzung der
freien Marktwirtschaft hat sich das Gewicht der Religion
nicht verringert. Neue und traditionelle Gruppierungen
bestehen nebeneinander. Im Zentrum der Tagung stand die
Rolle der Religionen in Afrika in ihren historischen,
sozialen und internationalen Zusammenhängen. Welchen
Beitrag können Religionen zukünftig in den
gesellschaftlichen und politischen
Transformationsprozessen in Afrika spielen? Die Tagung
fand im Rahmen des Akademie-Projektes "Sensibel für
Afrika" statt.
