A picket for peace
They stand in a circle, wearing black, silent.
"Stop the war" is written on their
banners, "no more nationalism and
discrimination!" Since the 9 October 1991,
committed women meet in the Yugoslavian capital
Belgrade, to hold a picket for peace.
In
the years of civil war, the "women in black"
organised more than 200 non-violent protest
events. They also protested against the
bombarding of Yugoslavia by the NATO. Their claim:
"Human rights and democracy can only be
achieved in negotiations and by supporting the
peace movement in the country."
The
"women in black" help refugees and war
victims and support conscientious objectors and
deserters. The initiative has also issued
numerous books on the theme "peace and
democratic development". They have been
translated into various languages.
