Context
The project "Protection of Indigenous People and
Their Lands in the Amazon Region - PPTAL", is part
of The Pilot Program
for the Conservation of Brazilian Tropical Forests - PPG7, established for the protection of
Tropical Forests and the conservation of biodiversity
reducing the emission of Carbon and encouraging a better
knowledge of the sustainable activities of Tropical
Forests. This program started in 1990, in Houston, as a
result of a meeting of the G7, made up of Germany, Canada,
the USA, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom . On
that occation, the participating heads of state expressed
interest in supporting of iniciatives directed at the
protection of brazilian tropical forests . A year later,
in Geneva, representatives from Brazil and from the
countries comprising the G7 defined the first phase of
the PPG7 with resources amounting to US$ 250 million. Out
of this figure, 20% is destined for the creation of the
Rain Forest Trust Fund - RFT, a fund administered by the World Bank and intended exclusively for the program.
The remaining US$ 200 million will be apportioned in the
form of co-associate financing.
Objective
PPTAL´s objective is to improve the quality of life of
the indigenous population and to promote the conservation
of their natural resources by regularising indigenous
lands of the Legal Amazon as well as the application of
protection measures in those areas.
