Professor
Wangari Maathai is a popular and respected Kenyan
and a world renowned environmentalist, who rose
to fame for her spirited campaigns against
government-backed forest clearance. Maathai is
also one of a new crop of MPs in Kenya, elected
to parliament
on the opposition National Rainbow Coalition
(Narc) ticket. Maathai
takes up the deputy environment ministry
portfolio in the
new cabinet.
Wangari Maathai
ist die erste Grüne Politikerin Kenias und
Afrikas, die es in eine Regierung geschafft hat;
sie wurde stellvertretende Ministerin für
Umweltschutz. In den frühen 70er Jahren
gründete sie die "Green Belt Movement"
und kämpfte für die Erhaltung des Waldes in
Kenia und Ostafrika. Ihrespektakulärste Aktion:
Sie schaffte es, den Präsidenten daran zu
hindern, mitten in der Stadt Nairobi einen der
größten Parks - den UHURU Park - in
Luxus-Appartments zu verwandeln. |

"...Diktaturen, die von
der Armut ihrer Bevölkerung profitieren, in
denen Korruption möglich ist, weil die
Bevölkerung so wenig gestärkt und informiert
wird, wollen nicht, daß jemand Menschen
organisiert. Denn organisierte Menschen, auch
wenn es 'nur' Arme oder Frauen sind, können
häufig eine Menge Einfluß gewinnen und
anschließend Forderungen stellen. Der Grund
warum die Regierung gegen unser Projekt war, lag
darin, daß wir einfachen Leuten den Rücken
stärkten und sie ermutigten, ihre Grundrechte
einzufordern und bestimmte Handlungsweisen von
ihrer Regierung zu verlangen..."

who said, what is the most important commandment;

yourself. This person said: and who is my

Jesus thought, but after you've been talking for
so long, and you have said all these wonderful
words and somebody comes and says: who is my
neighbor? But Jesus did not give up, He went and
said: 'well, your neighbors are those who I
need'. So, is not literally the person who lives
next to you, and for many of you and for many of
us who have been working in this journey. Our
neighbor is everybody, and everything that lives
on this planet. That is encapsulated in the last
paragraph of the Earth Charter..."
