Zanzibar
is a unique coral island lying in the Indian
Ocean a short distance from Tanzania. With Pemba,
and about 50 other islands, Zanzibar originally
was an independent country until 1964 when it was
united with Tanganyika to form Tanzania under
President Julius Nyerere. Presently it has its
own President and a degree of autonomy. |

United States has issued a warning about a
possible attack against visitors to the Tanzanian
island of Zanzibar. The State Department in
Washington said it had received information that
a terrorist group may be planning an attack on an
unspecified location frequented by Westerners. It
said the targets might include restaurants, night
clubs or hotels in Zanzibar. |
