Burundi has a population of
close to 6 million. Since independence, this tiny
Central African country has experienced bloody
ethnic conflicts. It has 3 ethnic groups - the
Hutu (85%), the Tutsi (14%) and the Batwa (1%).
The conflicts have already claimed thousands of
lives and although the international community
and the Burundi government are trying their best
to assist those who have been uprooted, the
situation is so critical that still more needs to
be done in order to reduce the violence and
provide some form of sustainable development.

Einer der Träger des
Alternativen Nobelpreises 2002 ist das
"Jugendzentrum Kamenge" in Burundis
Hauptstadt Bujumbura. Das kirchliche
Jugendbildungswerk widmet sich mitten im Krieg
der Überwindung des Misstrauens zwischen Hutu
und Tutsi.
Es ist nicht einfach, in Burundi der
Hutu-Tutsi-Polarisierung zu entkommen. Nach neun
Jahren Krieg zwischen Tutsi-Armee und
Hutu-Rebellen mit 250.000 Toten ist der Druck auf
Jugendliche immens, sich der einen oder anderen
Seite anzuschließen.

...Beginning in 1993,
fighting broke out between Hutu rebels and the
Tutsi army. As a result, the Tutsi army
"ethnically cleansed" two sections of
Bujumbura, killing or forcing the mostly Hutu
population to flee. One section where this
occurred was part of the city called Kamenge.
When the Friends Peace Teams Project's African
Great Lakes Initiative visited Bujumbura in
January, 1999, people were just beginning to
rebuild the destroyed sections of the city.
Kamenge had been one of the poorer areas of
Bujumbura and the adobe houses and shops with
corrugated iron roofs had been completed leveled
as vandals had carried off furniture, windows,
doors, and even the roofs, leaving the walls to
crumble from the downpours of El Nino rains...

Der Name "Centre
Jeunes Kamenge" (CJK) hat in der
Vergangenheit schon ausgereicht, um dem 1990 von
katholischen Xaverianer-Patern aus Italien
gegründeten Jugendwerk Probleme zu bescheren.
Kamenge ist ein Hutu-Township am Nordrand
Bujumburas; 1994, zu Beginn des Krieges, wurde es
von der Armee zu großen Teilen zerstört. Bis
heute infiltrieren immer wieder Hutu-Rebellen das
Viertel und die Armee führt Razzien durch. Daher
wird dem CJK zuweilen unterstellt, die Rebellen
zu unterstützen, zumal die katholische Kirche in
Burundi wie in Ruanda oft mit Hutu-Extremisten
sympathisiert.
