Pick up one bit of trash - in this case, an empty soda can - and ask yourself what it might be good for? That's what Michael Hoenes did one day in Lesotho and out of his meditations on the humble tin can have come an exciting new building form, a way to burn firewood more efficiently, novel furniture and a plan to give aids orphans a roof over their head - with electric light to boot.

Hoenes, 38, moved to Lesotho from his native Germany for love. But once there, he found a new mission in life, to help make African development more sustainable.

The Tin/Can Technology was presented to the world community for the first time during the World Exposition in Germany.
An entire restaurant made of tin/cans was erected in Africa Hall. The restaurant was manufactured in Lesotho and shipped to Germany.
The Tin/Can Restaurant was very well accepted by the visitors, organisors and the media. It became one of the highlights of the Africa Hall and EXPO 2000, and it was
also utilised as a meeting and celebration venue by many heads of states, e.g. King Letsie III from Lesotho for his national reception
