World
Summit on Sustainable Development
and the Environment:
Leaders Must Take Action
to Curb Climate Change in Africa
The WWF report, entitled Impact
of Climate Change on Life in Africa,
outlines the extensive effects of climate change
on Africa, and highlights that if carbon
pollution continues at current rates, people,
animals and plants will suffer serious
consequences. As natural resources become scarce
or disappear, many African communities will
suffer the effects of climate change-induced
alterations of agriculture, water supply and
disease. |
In den 90er Jahren
vervierfachten sich die Unwetterschäden
gegenüber den 60er Jahren. Schuld ist die
globale Erwärmung durch Treibhausgase. Sind wir
am "Point of no return"?
The floodwaters across Europe have not receded
before the questions begin. Campaigners like the
environmental group WWF point to changes within
the rivers themselves as a flood factor. Turning
rivers like the Danube into major waterways has
been a recipe for disaster, says WWF director
general in Vienna, Doctor Claude Martin.
"Many of these big river systems have been
severely modified through the last century and
once you have a flood, dams break or the water
flows over the dams and then reclaims the land
that was previously part of the river."
"Selbstverständlich muss die Politik aus
diesen Überschwemmungen jetzt lernen", sagt
der international renommierte Physiker und
Umwelt-Experte Ernst Ullrich v. Weizsäcker.
Klimaschutz ist so dringlich wie noch nie.
"Mehr Wohlstand bei weniger
Natur-Verbrauch!", das ist die
Herausforderung des 21. Jahrhunderts. 15.08.2002:
Princeton hydrologist Ignacio Rodriguez-Iturbe
has been selected to receive the Stockholm Water
Prize, a $150,000 award known informally as the
"Nobel Prize of water".

'No Water No Future'
THE
WATERDOME
of Johannesburg
"More then 1
billion people are without safe drinking water
and twice that number lack adequate sanitation.
More then three million people die every year
from diseases caused by unsafe water. The Africa
Water Taskforce has decided to put water high on
the agenda of the World Summit. For this reason
the WaterDome will be organised parallel to the
summit. The WaterDome will be the place where
'water' really becomes everybody's
business".
Johannesburg will be a unique opportunity for the
water sector to show the world that water is at
the crossroads of development and environment.
Poverty reduction very often starts with water
issues. Poverty and water are inextricably linked
in many parts of the world. The details of this
link may vary greatly, but the impact upon the
lives, livelihoods and prospects of the poor are
undeniable. Pro-poor action programmes in water
service provision and resource management must be
a central element of any programme to tackle
poverty and promote sustainable development.
