UNO speaks of
lost struggle against starvation
UNO sieht Kampf
gegen Hunger als verloren an |
|
|
Das Ernährungsprogramm der
Vereinten Nationen (WFP) sieht den
internationalen Kampf gegen den Hunger als
verloren an. Trotz der Anstrengungen von
Regierungen und hunderter Nicht-Regierungsorganisationen
litten mehr als 800 Millionen Menschen an Hunger
und täglich kämen 24.000 Menschen an den Folgen
von Unter- und Fehlernährung ums Leben, sagte
der Chef des Welternährungsprogramms (WFP),
James Morris, vor dem Auswärtigen Ausschuss des
US-Senats:
"Wir verlieren den Kampf gegen den Hunger."

Famine threat
looms over Africa
Hungersnot bedroht
Afrika |
|
|
|

An
estimated 38 million Africans face severe food
shortages at the end of a year when the continent
has been ravaged by drought and poor governance.
Southern Africa is worst hit, and thousands of
miles away, millions of people in Ethiopia are
also struggling to find daily food. Across six
southern African countries - Malawi, Zimbabwe,
Zambia, Swaziland, Lesotho and Mozambique, huge
populations have been unable to grow food this
year because drought and has withered their
crops, or because floods have drowned them. Of
these six countries Zimbabwe is the worst hit. |

Food crisis
worsens in Southern Africa
Ernährungslage im
Südlichen Afrika immer kritischer |

The United Nations says
that the food crisis in Southern Africa is
worsening, and that almost 14.5 million people in
the region are in urgent need of food aid. A
senior UN official said the intensity of the
crisis was increasing faster than expected and
said the situation had deteriorated most in
Zambia and Zimbabwe, where a disaster could only
be averted by urgent action. |

Damit soll verhindert
werden, dass einheimische Maissaat von genetisch
manipulierten Maiskörnern kontaminiert wird. |

The
United States and Zimbabwe have reached agreement
on supplying emergency food to the famine-stricken
southern African nation, U.S. Assistant Secretary
of State for Africa Walter Kansteiner told
allafrica.com Wednesday.
"The government of Zimbabwe has accepted U.S.
GM [genetically modified] maize with the proviso
either that it come in milled or that, once it
arrives in the country, it be milled."
Zimbabwe had refused to accept thousands of tons
of genetically altered corn, despite a famine
emergency, arguing that if some of the unmilled
kernels were sown instead of eaten, they would
begin contaminating Zimbabwe's indigenous crop.
The Zimbabwe government said that would threaten
the country's exports to Europe, which prohibits
bioengineered foods.

A row over genetically
modified food is threatening to derail efforts to
help the 12 million people across southern Africa
who are facing a critical food shortage.
The United Nations' attempt to bring relief aid
to the region appears to have hit an unexpected
problem: the fact that its largest donor, the
United States, is providing genetically modified
grain. Due to health concerns raised over GM
food, Zambia and its southern neighbour, Zimbabwe
has in the interim rejected GM food aid.
Genetically modified crops are banned across half
the world - including in the European Union. |

"Genetically
modified means an organism in which the genetic
material has been changed through gene technology
in a way that does not occur naturally by
multiplication and/or any natural recombination."
United Nations, 2000
Genetically Modified
Organisms (GMOs) are living organisms created
through genetic engineering. Scientists
transplant the genes of one species into another
species to try to transfer "desirable"
characteristics. Consumer groups,
environmentalists, and scientists have pointed
out several serious problems such genetic
tinkering may cause.
A U.S. official urged the Zambian government to
quickly make a decision on genetically modified (GM)
grain, warning the deteriorating situation in the
country would soon lead to more starvation deaths.

Das

Kleinkinder sollen mit Zusatznahrung versorgt
werden. |

The
regional Red Cross society leaders appealed for
about $62m dollars to provide direct support for
