| Patrice Lumumba tried to
form a government at independence in 1960 as
prime minister under President Kasavubu. He was
fired after four months, and imprisoned. In
January 1961 he was assassinated, Mobutu
ultimately seized power from Kasavubu in 1965
following a UN occupation through 1964, a Belgian
and American occupation, multiple governments,
and continuous violence. |
