African
Studies in Berlin were established in 1887 when
the Institute of Oriental Languages was founded
at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-University (now Humboldt
University at Berlin). The training of German
colonial officers and the teaching of African
languages was part of its curriculum. The history
of African Studies in Germany has been closely
linked with German history: with the Kaiserreich,
the Weimar Republic, NS-Germany, and the GDR/FRG.
Finally, as a result of the restructuring of the
Humboldt University after German unification, the
Department
of African Studies
was founded.
Afrikawissenschaften haben
in Berlin eine lange Tradition. 1887 wurde das
Seminar für Orientalische Sprachen an der
damaligen Friedrich-Wilhelm-Universität (heute
Humboldt-Universität) gegründet, zu dessen
Aufgabenbereich die Schulung deutscher
Kolonialbeamter sowie die Vermittlung
afrikanischer Sprachen gehörte. Die Geschichte
der Afrikanistik bzw. der Afrikawissenschaften in
Berlin war eng verbunden mit der deutschen
Geschichte: mit dem Kaiserreich, der Weimarer
Republik, Nazi-Deutschland und der DDR.
Schließlich führte die Umstrukturierung nach
der "Wende" zur Neugründung des
heutigen Seminars
für Afrikawissenschaften. |

Veit-Wild:What
is Poetry?
Dambudzo
Marechera:
Poetry is an attempt
to put into words what is inside a person
emotionally, intellectually,
imaginatively. The poet's job is to find
the equivalent, the verbal correlative of
a particular feeling. This idea is from
T.S Elliot. The only difficulty is that
there are no words for what you are
feeling

dass ich Afrikawissenschaften studiere." Und
auch Flora Veit-Wild, Professorin für

immer wieder die Erfahrung, dass sie mit ihrem

Critics have chosen to ignore the question why
Westerners always want to sell the Africans.
Flora Veit-Wild, who writes much on the works of
African artists, has been constantly snubbed by
the local artists. Veit-Wilds literature
covers the autobiographies and creations of
African artists like Zimbabwean genius poet, the
late Dambudzo Marechera, and Tanzanian dramatist
and poet Ebrahim Hussein. She has been accused of
trying to make money out of the continents
most sacred names... Novell
