"THE SPREAD OF AIDS IN PRISONS"
RBO-Author: Steven Taruvinga

Homosexuality is taboo in Zimbabwe. However, in prison, many people are forced into unprotected homosexuality and this has resulted in the spread of many STDs. The debate has been whether to distribute condoms to prisoners.

"Moffat was thrown into that part of the prison where hard core, long time prisoners, had set up something which worries my society, homosexual practise."

Lainet Mawire tells us the story of Moffat Karambamuchero.
As a manager, Moffat took money from the bank where he worked, with the hope of paying it back secretly, but later he realised that his scheme could not work.
He had spent all of the stolen money to entertain women, betraying his own wife. He had embarked on a glamorous life which he thought should be the pattern for a successful black businessman
in the early years of independent Zimbabwe.
The net was closing in on him. After the failure of an attempted suicide, he gave himself up to the police.
He was sentenced to two years behind bars.

While in prison, Moffat became a devoted Christian.
This with a supporting letter from the prison Chaplin, helped him reconcile with his family and society.
He then decided to help other prisoners, by establishing a Prison Fellowship Branch in Harare, International Africa Region.

'Oh, no - we don't do these things'
